kitchen diary: february 22

———
i originally planned to make a traditional sunday breakfast today…coffee, pancakes, bacon and eggs. my favorite. but last night, at this place, we ate oysters, and quail, and hangar steak and duck confit. and drank manhattans. and then berries and chocolate for dessert (we didn’t even order it!). so when i woke up this morning, i felt a bit…full. and needed something lighter. so, i changed my breakfast plan and i went out and bought a multigrain loaf at the bakery. they had mineola oranges that looked so bright on this grey february day, so i bought a few of those. instead of coffee, i brewed some jasmine green tea (a new favorite) and topped the nutty bread with fresh ricotta, good honey, and a small bit of freshly-ground black pepper. it was exactly what i needed. what isn’t delicious when it’s topped with ricotta cheese? i’d eat a piece of plywood with ricotta and honey on it, i think.
also, this afternoon i made stephanie’s homemade ginger ale (recipe here) and it is so good. i think i’ll mix up some bourbon cocktails with it next weekend…

i always forget about ricotta but i love that combo. sounds so great. i had parmesan + black peppercorn toast for breakfast, and i bought a huge ginger root at the grocery store to make the ginger ale too. ginger is good for the soul, i think.
this looks gorgeous. i know only a few other guys who take such pleasure in eating and drinking. i salute you! (hope you don’t think i’m being sexist. perhaps i am! yikes).
:) mav
i thought about making the ginger ale today too…but got caught up with other things. your breakfast looks divine. i love honey on anything.
Gosh – this sounds fantastic. I want to make that ginger ale too.
Shari’s right – ginger is good for the soul.
That looks and sounds like a perfect meal (and I’m with you on the plywood). Have you ever tried making your own ricotta? It’s not hard, and it’s delicious! I’m really looking forward to trying the ginger ale for myself.
Wow…everything sounds divine.
I’m hungry and dreaming of the oysters and duck confit!
:) thanks for sharing…
thanks all!
mav, sometimes i think i work in the wrong industry, since i spend so much time thinking about food…
and austen, i saw a homemade ricotta recipe online recently, i can’t remember where. i need to get some cheesecloth – it sounds like a project i’d enjoy!
I hope Im involved in the bourbon cocktails next weekend!!
um, meg – i think you are going to be drinking margaritas on the beach in mexico next weekend…(i’m not jealous or anything)
Brian!
I am delurking — in a way that feels a bit like a confession, since I know you — to say that I truly love reading your blog and am so happy I found you (again?). Found you on Flickr a while back through a comment on one of Maria’s photos — I thought “I bet I know this ‘bferry’!”. I feel it’s high time I say hello and good day to you.
x Lis
And holy crap that’s Meg!!
ha ha ha ha! lis warman, i can’t believe it. how unbelievably great to hear from you! and yes, that’s the hungry roach (i think she should’ve started her blog while we were dining in proctor). your business looks fantastic! i’m emailing you now.
Ricotta, honey, and salt on good bread is one of my favorite all time food combinations. I recommend trying the housemade ricotta with thyme, chestnut honey, figs and salt on fruited bread at Five Leaves (at the top of McCarren Park). http://www.fiveleavesny.com
