a café in the afternoon
July 7, 2009

…………..
one thing i miss about being a student is spending long afternoons in a café. even though i was usually studying, there is something i really enjoy about passing an afternoon with some coffee and baked goods, people-watching, reading. i sometimes think i’d be more productive at work if i could spend the afternoon in a coffee shop!
today, i planned to share some links with you. but i’ve been sort of distracted lately and i haven’t been doing much exploring around the internets. so … i’d love it if you would leave a comment and share a website or two that is inspiring you this week. what are you enjoying online?
enjoy your day.

Oh, I really miss the café routine, too. When I was writing my senior thesis, I used to make morning-coffee dates with friends with a rule that we weren’t allowed to leave until we’d each written four pages…
You might have seen it already as it is doing the rounds, but this week I loved this interesting music video:

the photography is AMAZING. the gentleman who takes the photos also has his own site where he does weddings and it is some of the best work i’ve ever seen. i think he has a flickr site too which i’ve nosed around in. (hufort) enjoy!
I’ve been checking out these two photographers lately:

Both are food/farm related and stunning. Enjoy!
we saw the richard avedon exhibit at icp this weekend and have enjoyed looking through his online portfolio. i think you would enjoy his photo collection called ‘reportage’

Yeah, having an excuse to spend hours in a coffee shop is pretty much the only thing I miss about law school.
I’m sure you’ve seen this website before. I’ve done a lot of cooking from it recently and absolutely adore it!

greetings!
i found your blog through ‘this joy+ride’. viewing your photos have a calm and soothing effect. may i be so bold as to recommend my own blog ‘when worlds collide’ to you? like yours, it’s a reflection of my environment, but oh how different our environments are!
peace.

it might seem silly that i am absolutely in love with this wedding photographer’s blog when i am not planning a wedding any time soon. but look at how creative and breathtaking her work is!

This is definitely something that I miss about being a student as well. I do my best to set aside time as often as possible, to escape to my special getaway and get lost in the sweet fragrance of coffee and the lives of strangers. Whether that be people watching or a great book, I have a special love for all things cafe.

I know what you mean about time in a cafe. I did a lot of that in graduate school.
I love the quiet of a cafe in the afternoon too! Now that I have a teenager, I find myself taking her between school and other events to do homework instead of coming all the way home. And here is a new favorite blog that I am loving, it includes great photography and food:

I really miss that too, although I always try to get in a bit of time in my favorite coffee shop right before I teach my class.
I just found this make your own music site and I love it:

I am new to your blog. I really enjoy your photos and how you capture everyday life. I’m a big fan of http://www.featureshoot.com/
I’m thoroughly enjoying the shots of Portugal at Liivian talossa (http://liiviantalossa.blogspot.com). I can’t understand a word since I do not speak Finnish, but the pictures really speak to me.

I’m enjoying your blog and photos a lot, Brian.
really beautiful blog. so glad to have found you!
Hey, it’d DUMBO!! I love that place!!
Hey Brian. I concur- I def miss being able to work the afternoon away at a coffeeshop. Law school didn’t seem as depressing when I had the freedom to spend the afternoon in an armchair (even when I was weighed down with a thousand page treatise on Con Law).
At any rate, excellent work as usual. In addition to my usual suspects, I am enjoying these websites this week- http://www.tastespotting.com; http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com; http://thisiswhyyourefat.com; and http://awkwardfamilyphotos.com. Enjoy!
Long afternoons in coffee shops are the best. Preferably with a crossword, some friends, and windows that are all steamed up. Happy memories.
I’ve been really enjoying the Radio Lab blog recently (not to mention their new podcasting schedule). And Schott’s Vocab, too.
Cafes are one of my favorite places in the world, to be.
And Buenos Aires is like the kingdom of cafes!
I am currently loving this stream:

There is also this interesting group about cafes from Buenos Aires with a story:

beautiful. calm. just what an afternoon should feel like.
