it is a hard thing to do, but you all have rendered me speechless. the photos above are part of a top-secret project organized by jen. unbeknownst to me, she asked flickr friends across the world to take a photo and upload it to send me on my way. as i checked flickr this morning, these amazing messages kept pouring in.

i’m so thankful, and very lucky, to have met such wonderful people online through a shared interest in photography. someday, i will find the words to describe how much i value this community and the people i’ve met across the world(in person or online). but for now, i will offer a very simple, very sincere, thank you.

there is no real theme to the photos above, except that i shot them on my last sunday afternoon in brooklyn. the top 2 photos were taken at a delicious meal i shared with my parents. the light that came through the window next to our table was amazing.

i have to run but before i go, i wanted to say thanks for all of your emails and comments lately. i have been trying to keep up but it’s been hard … however, i truly appreciate your support. posting might become less frequent around here in the coming week or two … but i’ll pop in whenever i can. there will be so much to share in the coming months! i’m excited.

last week, i stopped in to one of my favorite shops in new york, billy reid.

they have really well-designed, thoughtful clothing for men (and women), most of it is made in the USA and the look is “southern-bred.” they were having a promotion and so i spent some time poking around their beautiful store on bond street. it’s the sort of warm, hospitable place where i’d like to kick back and relax in one of their leather chairs for an afternoon, with fleet foxes playing on the stereo and a glass of bourbon in my hands.

one of the best things about getting ready to move across the pond is the loads of fun i’ve been having with friends (both new and old) before i leave. the photos above were taken on a sunday afternoon in boston, when i was visiting for my brother’s engagement party.  it was one of those days in october where you almost can’t believe how perfect the weather is. after celebrating with my family the night before, i spent the day with good friends — people that have known me for a long time.   it was such a memorable day.

and speaking of good times with good friends, meg and i have collaborated again at THE HUNGRY ROACH. check it out!  i agree 100% with meg’s review … tipsy parson was delicious, and they had only been open for 2 nights! quite impressive.  if you’re in NYC, you should visit.

i’ll have more good stuff to share soon. i hope your day is nice.

good morning to you. amidst the craziness of this october, i’ve managed to have 2 or 3 days that were perfect — the way i’d like to remember this month. there were a few sundays in particular when my mind (and my schedule) was clear, and i spent the day walking around with my camera, meeting friends for beers and eats, watching a few gorgeous sunsets (and even catching improptu fireworks after dinner!), and stopping in to brooklyn shops here & there. i’m sharing some photos above taken on those days.

last month, matt posted something about inspiration that made me think. he said that there are a couple of places where, no matter what, he can find some photographic inspiration and take some shots. he’s posted about flea markets and airports, and it got me thinking …. where do i go to snap a few inspiring photos, even when i’m not feeling too creative?

of course, the answer was restaurants and cafés! i always seem to find some good light in these places, whether it’s twinkling lights and votives at a cozy restaurant at night, or flat blue light at a coffee shop in the late afternoon. above, i’ve posted some photos taken in different restaurants and cafés.

where do you turn for inspiration when you need it?

hello, hello.
just popping in to share the 2 photos above. i really like them paired up.

i started to find a bit of autumn last night. i shared a cozy & delicious dinner with 2 new friends at this place, where we ate black pepper pasta, cast-iron roast chicken, and country pork chops. today, i’m still dreaming of the sweet potato pie for dessert.  (food always does it for me, i guess)

i’ve had trouble finding autumn lately. work is too busy, getting ready for my move takes up most of my spare time, and i’m trying to pack in as much as i can before i head to london.

this means that i haven’t been cooking much (or, at all) in my kitchen, which i miss terribly. i need an afternoon spent chopping apples for apple crisp or a pie. i’d like some time to make squash soup.

and i haven’t spent any time looking for the signs of autumn – changing leaves and light, wood smoke and wool. the top photo above was taken at the beginning of september, when this season felt so far away. it was a very warm weekend, and i picked up a single red leaf on the street. it seemed out of place, so i tucked it into my book and snapped a photo later that day. i think i need to take some time to notice the colors of this season, and i need to take a walk on a clear day.

so bear with me as i try to find my footing and face this transition period head-on. the mosaic of images above will help, and an imminent break at work should give me the time i need. i did buy some winesap apples and a cider doughnut yesterday, and i’m listening to j tillman’s new album (perfect for this time of year, i think). i’m going to look for autumn, and i’ll be back to share what i find, soon.
