pdx/sea, no. 1

September 29, 2009

when i said i shot a lot of film on vacation out west, i wasn’t joking around!

above, some photos from the first roll that i got back. these were shot with slide film (fuji sensia 200, i think – i am going to get my hands on more of it!).

and i know that if you’ve stayed at the ace hotel before, or even if you just browse flickr alot, these photos will look quite familiar. but i had to share them, because i quite honestly could’ve moved in to that place and stayed forever. i ate a few meals at clyde common, which were all spot-on. that is carrot gnudi above, with mint and mustard oil … oh yes. i think it’s time for lunch.

i’ll be back with more to share soon … until then, i’m going to listen to the new avett brothers album on repeat. such good stuff.

have a good one.

    on slide

    do it at the
    i love the
    color tones of it…

Yay! There is nothing better than traveling vicariously with an excellent photographer/eater. I can’t wait to see more photos.

  3. September 29, 2009 1:00 pm

Oh, this looks like a good roll to remember. Such lovely tones and light.

  4. September 29, 2009 1:10 pm

YES! These are all great! I’m so psyched now because I just got 4 rolls of expired Fuji Sensia 100. Now I’m super excited to start shooting with it.

I was going to ask the same thing Gwen asked.

otherwise, these are FANTASTIC. I stayed in the ace hotel in Manhattan. An awesome place.

    Great stuff brian.

I really love that Evan B. Harris mural in the stairwell. It’s so beautiful.

Great to see my old neighborhood through your lens! Looking forward to more PDX as well as Seattle.

I am addicted to the new Avett Brothers cd! It is so good. Thanks for the heads up about the exclusive listen on NPR too.

Your photos are really interesting, especially the ones in the bar. talk about perfect lighting!

  10. September 29, 2009 1:57 pm

Oh, you’ve made me so homesick. There’s just something about the light in the Northwest. I think between 3.30 and 4 p.m. was my favorite. Coffee time…

all so wonderful. carrot, mint, and mustard. love that combo.

  13. September 29, 2009 7:45 pm

The only danger about staying at the Ace is that I’d never want to leave the hotel. There’s no way I could pick just one favourite from these.

  14. September 29, 2009 7:49 pm

Oh, the Ace Hotel, how I dream of staying there one day!

  15. September 29, 2009 9:08 pm

these are wonderful! i love the top two the best. oh, and that little potted plant. i’m curious about slide film, i should look more into it.

  16. September 29, 2009 10:50 pm

Ha, I think that about the Ace photos every time I stay there too, but can never resist taking them anyway. You got some new takes on a very well-photographed subject. And yes please. tell us all about slide film!

Brian, I would love to see some film shot at New York’s new Ace hotel on 29th (28th?) street! They are now serving Stumptown coffee in (near) the lobby, makes for a great afternoon.
