. . . . . . .

more good stuff about summer … open windows, fresh air.

and i’ve got a proposition for you today.

there are loads of people who write me nice emails and comments, which i always appreciate. but i also know there are a lot of you who are lurking out there on the internets, and i’d like to know more about you.

so, here’s the deal: leave me a comment on this post before thursday night. say hello, especially if you haven’t done so before, or tell me your favorite thing about summer. i’ll pick someone at random and i will send the lucky guy or gal a large print of one of my photos, your choice*, from my summer photo set.  sound good?

and a link for you today: new photos on my friend xavier’s photography portfolio. check it out.

have a good day.

* caveat: i need to be able to locate the negative for any film photo … which is not an easy task, considering my organizational skills in that regard. but i’ll do my best.

Ack! I have been caught. I have been happily lurking for a couple of months now, after my sister shared your blog. I am living vicariously through your London summer as I am sweating it out in Oxford, MS! My favorite thing about summer: it is a toss up between home grown Mississippi tomatoes and linen anything. Tough call.

Guilty as charged. So: hello Brian! I do love the open windows in this post, seeing as it’s 90+ in Georgia and our air conditioning has been on for at least a month. And my favorite thing about summer in the South … the cicada chorus in the evenings. I heard nothing like it growing up in Wisconsin – it can be wonderfully deafening.

i open up the comments roll to leave my inaugural response, and who do I find to be the first post, but my own dear sister. clearly that little (completely validated) guilt trip worked on us both! i have loved your blog, discovered through molly wizenberg’s, for what could be a few years now. initially drawn to (and inspiried by) your discipline through your 365 project, it has been a joy to see your photos and enjoyment of them continue to develop. fav. thing about summer: it just seems that everything is a bit brighter. colors, tastes, moods, experiences. somehow, life just seems a bit ‘more’.

recently, my favorite thing about summer (or at least the first thing i thought of) is quite mundane. cold brewing coffee in a french press at night and pouring it over ice and milk in the morning and driving to work with all the windows down just as the sun’s coming up is my favorite thing so far about this summer. ridiculous, i know.

my favorite things about summer: music festivals, drinks with friends on outdoor terraces, backyard bbqs under tiki lanterns, biking up the mountain then down through the cemetery at dusk, gelato, bountiful markets, bare feet (these toes like to be free)

  13. June 29, 2010 9:06 am

sounds very good ;) favourite thing about summer… possibly afternoons at the beach, when it starts to cool down, your skin is warm and smells of sun and salty breeze. to me that’s the most intoxicating scent. and then you’re beginning to think of what to have for dinner…

  14. June 29, 2010 9:08 am

Whoop… another lurker here. I’ve been visiting regularly since I saw your photos featured over on Kitsune Noir at the beginning of the month. Fell in love with your photographs, especially the light spotting collection in your portfolio.

So, Hello! And, my favorite things about summer are fruit salad & picnics & cartwheels & weekends at my friends’ river-side cottage.

I just recently came across your blog and have been lurking everyday since. Pictures are just beautiful.

My favorite thing about summer? The summer playlists I make while I’m driving or lounging outside by the poolside. There is a simplicity about the summer, and it correlates with the music that accompanies it.

  17. June 29, 2010 9:16 am

Hello! I’ve been checking out your blog now for months, but this is my first comment. I really love your photos, the moments you capture and they all tell more than you could say.

  19. June 29, 2010 9:18 am

I think I’ve said hello, once or twice, but not nearly enough. I love visiting this space each morning and seeing your beautiful photography. My favorite thing about summer is having lots of local fresh ingredients to cook with.

  20. June 29, 2010 9:19 am

Another lurker – guilty as charged! My favorite part of summer is probably a tie between early morning runs, before things get hot and as the sun rises, and 4-H county fairs, where I can eat funnel cakes and look at all the animals :)

my favorite thing about summer…hmm, probably picnics in the park outside the menil museum here in houston, followed by naps in the soft grass after eating too many strawberries. though if i were in london, the answer would probably be freshly-made lemonade at borough market and the RA’s summer show.

keep up the great photo work.

  23. June 29, 2010 9:23 am

    Oh! A fun de-lurking task!
My favorite thing about summer is bare legs and sandals. Today I smelled the summer rain, which is also lovely.

  24. June 29, 2010 9:28 am

I don’t think I comment very often at all, but I love looking at your photos! They are such a nice spot of the day. Long time lurker, first time commenter. I love your photos and am constantly inspired by them! I’m spending what I’m used to as the usual summer months in the Southern Hemisphere (Buenos Aires), and while I’m enjoying exciting football times, I miss strawberries, oh-so-much. Farmers’ market fruit is definitely my favourite thing about summer. Cheers!

    Hi Brian
I too am guilty of lurking,I have your blog in my Google Reader.
I love all aspects of summer but if I had to choose just one it would be the the long sunshiny days. You can stay up late and play outside.

Ciao, My favorite thing this summer is new because I now have a huge wood burning oven in my backyard. So summer 2010 my favorite thing is making wood fired pizza with my 16 and 18 year old boys. We build the fire together, we make the pizzas together and then we argue over which one is better. The younger son James holds nothing back. He told me the other day I have a lot of work to do to improve the pizzas. I am grateful that they want to hang around the old man. When I was their age I couldn’t stand my parents. Ciao, Seamus.

Well, of course, the longer days make summer pretty awesome. I just love sitting with my family and friends in that lingering light enjoying a cold drink or something off the grill and talking, sometimes, about a whole lot of wonderful nothing.

  38. June 29, 2010 9:58 am

my favorite thing about summer is reaping the rewards of our garden and eating peas right off the vine with my two little ones.

This is so funny you are doing this today, as I literally just found your blog yesterday. I am in love with that second photo, the soft cotton of the curtains just says “summer breeze” to me…it’s very beautiful! I’ve browsed through your blog a bit and I definitely love your photography style.

One thing I love about summer (being in Southern California) is riding my bike by the beach. The balmy breeze carries with it the mingled aromas of summertime–salt water, coconut and banana scented tanning lotion–and it’s just the best feeling! I, too, am having a bit of a love affair with summer this year. :)

Brian, hello! My first post, so I hope it’s worthwhile. I love your pictures and have definitely drawn inspiration and tips from them!

My favorite thing about summer is the smell of fresh cut grass, the sound of the bell on an ice cream truck, fresh fruit, and most importantly, the vibrant colors, from sundresses to flowers to plastic beach toys. I live in Chicago, so the city really comes alive and embraces its warm weather since our winters are so brutal.

I came across your blog through “Orangette” and have loved seeing each of your new posts…I particularly like to see your Holga photographs (I have just recently gotten my own Holga and have been enjoying experimenting with it).

In terms of my summer favorites, it is a toss up between warm evenings filled with negronis, or summer radishes! Of course…beach vacations, outdoor concerts, and beer festivals aren’t too shabby either:)

  44. June 29, 2010 10:04 am

    I am a somewhat lurker.

But since moving from Texas to Chicago, my favorite things about summer are EVERYTHING. But the best is the amount of sunlight. I will take 5AM-8PM of daylight all year. Its so wondeful.

  45. June 29, 2010 10:08 am

have been caught lurking. (sounds so… grimy!)

What I’m enjoying about this summer is the way people come to life – and try to be outside as much as possible, talking to each other, soaking up the sun, reading outside, eating outside, enjoying concerts outside. Anything to be outside. I tend to go to bed early, so even when I go to sleep around 9:30…there’s still light outside and I hear the neighbors up and about..and I feel comforted by that.

    Loving your photos. Soooo much.

Living in New York during the summer can be sometimes overly hot, with the warmth radiating from the cement streets with every step you take but to even it out my favorite thing about summer would be:
walking along empty streets on a breezy early morning and looking up at the awe-inspiring building around just as the sun began to rise. one can see clearly the light sliding across the brown-stones and the birds waking up all around you.
That is a sight to see any day.

for summer, it has to be food related for me, cucumber and sour cream salads, homegrown, local tomatoes, corn on the cob, and watermelon. somehow it seems a sin to me to have these at other times of the year when the flavors aren’t quite the same.

  63. June 29, 2010 11:09 am

Hi Brian! Just discovered your blog yesterday (does that count as lurker?) as I’ve been seeking out photography blogs. My favorite thing about summer is taking photos of my son and his friends playing outside (and in…) and in this very-different-from-winter-light.

  65. June 29, 2010 11:13 am

Hi, Brian – I’m guilty of being a long-time lurker, but I absolutely love your work! When I lived in Texas, summers were insufferably long and hot but I always looked forward to getting up at the crack of dawn every other Sunday, grabbing my camera, and hitting the backroads. My car’s A/C was often questionable, and I remember coming home half the time covered in dust from having the windows rolled down. But, there was nothing like standing on the side of the road – covered in burrs and the pavement heat seeping into my shoes – just to get the right photo.

  66. June 29, 2010 11:13 am

    Hello! I’m de-lurking to appease you :)

The best thing I like about summer is the cool Delta breeze(http://ams.confex.com/ams/Annual2005/techprogram/paper_84880.htm) that we get in the evenings. After baking, boiling, broiling and burning all day long in the 100+º heat in Northern CA, the breeze will roll in and chill the evening so perfectly. Lovely time to sit outside on the porch and enjoy a nice, cold beer!

Ooh, a lurker–that’s me! Thanks for reminding me that when I see something awesome (like these photos) I should say something! They are truly beautiful.

It’s hard to pick just one thing about summer that is my favorite, but when I really think about it, I realize I love the way summer makes my muscles feel: relaxed and loose and free, like the weight of summer on my shoulders is lighter than other seasons.

  75. June 29, 2010 11:43 am

Hi, Brian! I’ve been caught as well. I’ve been visiting since last year, and I love your photos. I think I’ve commented once or twice on your posts, but I’ll do it again. I love the way that you put your photos together. They give me the sense of little snapshots of your day. You’re a very talented photographer! Summer has always been my favorite month, and I always try get a road trip or two in. I love the long drives, the destinations, the chance of photographing something new.

    Hello!

I think my favourite thing about Summer might be that first smell of barbecue. It always hits me early on in the season and reminds me how much I love the summer and always gets me excited.
I’ve been a visitor here since you were posted on Kitsune Noir. I think you’re stuff is great and always an inspiration.

    Best wishes,

That was the most gentle, subtle request I’ve ever seen for lurkers to come out of the closet! How lovely.

I’m a big fan, you inspire me daily, and I now have to go find a way to take some photos of the breeze.

    Thanks for your work –

    hi there,

this morning as i biked to work i was thinking that i wanted to stop lurking about here and say hello. what a lovely coincidence! i’ve enjoyed your photos and blog for awhile now. your london photos make me nostalgic for my time living in east london…something about the way you capture the light there makes my heart hurt a bit. i hope you are enjoying your first summer in the UK. it’s hot in brooklyn and i’m most enjoying warm nights, cold coffee on my fire escape, early morning walks with my dog, and the scents of impromptu barbecue parties wafting their way into my apartment.

thanks for sharing these bits of your life!

I only just found your blog in the last week or two, but I love it already!

My favorite thing about summer (even though I say I hate this season.. I”m more of a cold weather person) is the wonderfully warm evenings. I do love the feeling of a summer night.

  82. June 29, 2010 12:25 pm

“Lurk” is such an unattractive word, isn’t it? Ah well. I guess I have been. Lurking, that is.

So hello there, Brian. I think I first found your site through Molly Wizenberg’s (she has been and remains my culinary hero) and have been a dedicated lurker ever since. I love your photographs and musings. And as for summer, I adore the farmers markets and the bounty of fresh produce they bring.

Hi. I look at your blog almost every day because I just love your pictures. My favorite thing about summer is the produce — especially peaches and raspberries (the king and queen of fruit!). It’s so wonderful to go to a farmer’s market and come home with lucious fruit and vegetables. Makes me feel healthy and virtuous!

Hope you are having a wonderful summer over there in London — my absolute favorite city in the world.

    Well, hello!

I can’t remember how I found your blog but I’ve been following it for quite a while now. I’ve spent quite a bit of time in London, so I really like your photos from there.
I think my favorite thing about summer is the way the days feel endless (and summer days kind of are here in Scandinavia), all filled with sun and happiness.

  85. June 29, 2010 1:02 pm

I absolutely love your blog and your photos have inspired me to pull back out my film cameras. Currently my favorite thing about summer is eating fresh snap peas off the vine – and the smell of my tomato plants as I water them and watch them grow and grow. Laying in the sun reading isn’t bad either.

These three photos are so beautiful and make me so excited for the summer.

  86. June 29, 2010 1:10 pm

Berries and stone fruits. Falling asleep on a dock while listening to the sound of waves lapping at the shore. Long days. The smell after it rains. The way my skin feels after spending a day outdoors. Laundry dried on the line. Pie. Evenings shared with friends. Watching the sunset over Lake Michigan. Driving the back roads with the windows down and the radio on. Reading in a hammock or lawn chair. There are a lot of things I like about summer. And it isn’t even my favorite season.

  87. June 29, 2010 1:11 pm

Hi Brian! My favorite thing about summer is long drives into the countryside and the sound of crickets at dusk. The song “Green Arrow” by Yo La Tengo captures this experience perfectly.
Thanks for the great inspiration! You’re the best.

Great idea, pulling us out of our comfort zones. I wish I remembered how I came across your blog a few months back, but all I know is that lurking has been an enjoyable part of all of my days since. My favourite part of summer is having the time to explore – whether that means a road trip with close friends to a new city, or just finding new gems wherever you call home; a used bookstore, a new local band, or a tire swing in a quiet park. Thank you for all your inspiration!

Hello, Brian. I posted one time a while ago, but for the most part, as many of the other readers declared themselves, I, too, am a long-time lurker and admirer. I wish I could tell you articulately how much I respect and like your style and vision but the best I can say is this: when I first happened upon your site some time in late 2009, your images gave me goosebumps.
What do I love about summer… I love that it consumes all my senses in the best ways possible: warm air on my bare skin; heirloom tomatoes so sweet and flavorful they can be eaten straight from the vine; flowers alive with vibrant color; the sounds of crickets, cicadas, and birds back for the season; the smell of freshly cut grass.

Hi there, Brian! I’ve been checking into your blog almost daily since I discovered it a few weeks ago. I love your photography and really enjoy seeing bits of your adventures in London–I hope to live there someday, and might actually be moving there in January. My favorite thing about summer is probably laying on the beach ’til it’s so hot I can’t stand it anymore, then going for a swim in the ocean, and then letting the sun dry my wet skin and hair. I’m hoping this June Gloom in Santa Barbara subsides so I can enjoy some sweet beach days soon.

My favorite summer moment. Sitting in an Adirondack chair on my front porch in LA. It’s 8:30ish and the evening light is bright but fading quickly. The skyline slips quickly into silhouette — branches of the huge old chinaberry, then the telephone poles and lines and the city beyond — all sharp black shapes against the glowing azure sky. The Labradors, Digby and June, lay prone at my feet, stealth and alert, scanning the quiet for clues of squirrels or crows. The tall, lean boy who runs all over the neighborhood with his dog glides by almost silently, just the ting-ting-ting of the dog’s tag against its leash gives them away. Two houses up the hiss of Rainbirds coming to life and finding their rhythm. ch ch ch ch ch. tat tat tat tat tat. ch ch ch ch ch. The old man in the house on the corner switches on his bathroom light, a soft amber glow through frosted glass. He’ll be in bed soon. The slowest hour of the day.

I’m in Australia and it’s getting chilly now (mid-winter so all the way down to 15oC), so I’m dreaming of summer. The Bondi to Bronte walk, Sculpture by the Sea, picnics and weekend trips to the beach. If I was still in London, I’d say dinner in a gastro pub garden, picnics in Richmond Park that last all day, long walks by the river.

But if I had to pick a favorite thing about summer, it would have to be the abundance of fresh produce: bright green stalks of asparagus, dark mouth watering bing cherries, bright red strawberries lined up in a box, mangos so ripe you can smell them in the air….

But I personally love autumn with the clear cloudless days, the crunch of falling leaves, a nip in the air and the smell of the burning wood (okay, the last one, I have to go upstate to my parents place to get). Pulling on sweaters and drinking hot chocolate, snuggling with a good book. :)

Lurkers unite! Here’s another one from Belgium.

My favorite thing about summer? The way the world seems to be blooming. Everything appears to be fully open: flowers and people, shoes, the hearts of strangers, my own heart. But then just as we’ve gotten the taste of summer – our lips are still wet with watermelon – autumn is already there. It’s a sad thing summer must end, but at least we will always have our memories. Reminiscing is perhaps one of the best things about summer – although it’s technically an after-effect.

What I also love about summer is that it inspires you to take such beautiful summer film stills. ;-) They add a wonderful aesthetic touch to the reminiscing.

And then suddenly autumn is there – so beautiful – and then winter. Followed by spring – oh, how I delight in spring! And then summer’s already back again. It’s a wonderful cycle indeed. I love the alteration of the seasons; the variation in it, but also the regularity of it. And always the different kinds of light.

(Well, I just hád to teach you all about the seasons, for I was sure you had never heard about autumn, winter or spring before. :))

    Keep up the wonderful blog!
Kind regards from across the Channel.
(You must visit Ghent someday, if you haven’t already done so.)

best part about summer is somewhere between falling asleep to the sound of a distant thunderstorm or a ripe watermelon eaten at it’s peak. :)

Everyday life is beautiful through your pictures. I love the warm, bright summer nights here where it’s dark and cold most of the time. They keep me alive.

Funny, I was just thinking about this last night. I think my favorite thing about summer is bike-riding at dusk, with a warm breeze all around me and my dress fluttering behind me, the sky going purple above and this weird sound that’s sort of half-human, half-netherworld winking about.

    hello brian :)
I am one of the quiet lurkers, from Australia so it is winter here, and I am wishing (o so much) for summer. One of the best things about summer is the amazing apricot gelato I eat on the way to the beach, from a great Italian place just around the corner from my home. Also I have begun/joined a tradition of traveling to India in our summer, I’m going for the third time this november :)

Can I also say, I dig your music mixes and (somewhat embarrassingly) I have recently taken to shooting my lunch photos in either Brian-style (across the table, showing food and my eating companion from the shoulders down) or molly-style (just the food, sometiems half-finished, from directly above with bright flash).

    so… happy summer!!! x

My favourite thing about summer is going out of the door, just as you are, no shoes, no jacket, maybe sunglasses. Being able to sleep with the window wide open. Picking strawberries. Swimming in lakes.

my favourite thing about summer is the light and the long warm nights that pose no limits to what you can do. this summer, i am glad to be home in portugal, and to enjoy hot, hot sunny days, and hope to smell the sea breeze quite soon. i miss a swim in the sea, and long days on the beach and picnics in the pine woods, and those will be the best things this summer.

Hi there.. I have commented once before, but I really enjoy your photos. My sister is in London at the moment, though she has said that has been warm, I think she spoke too soon as apparently it’s raining now. Summer for me means long sunny days, a warm breeze and driving with the windows down. It’s winter where I am at the moment so it’s rather cold.

My uber-practical favorite part about summer is not having to wear a coat to work. I also love growing my own salad veggies in summer. Nothing beats homegrown lettuce and tomatoes still warm from the sunshine.

  165. June 30, 2010 8:07 am

best part of the summer: when you still have sand in your wallet and happen to stumble upon it while on a business lunch on a rainy October day. Works just as fine with the forgotten breakfast receipt from the Brüsselerplatz café from your Cologne vacation.
makes you feel like a million.

    Hey, Brian.
I found your site through http://www.fanny.foodbeam.com/, she linked to a photo of yours once and I fell in love with everything you take. I’m from a little village in the north-west of England, so London is a bit of a mythical beast to me, and I love the eccentricities and the details and little things you point out.
But I’ve always been too shy to say so.

What I love about summer, by the way, are the evenings. When the light is soft and drawn out, and it’s quiet and not too hot. When you’re in your car at nine pm and it’s still light, and you feel like sure, you could go home, but you could also keep driving into the sunset, as long as you wanted.

  168. June 30, 2010 8:31 am

Hello! Haven’t said that before, but here it is now, for all to see on the internet.
I love what you do, I got to know your work through flickr, but I’m glad I found your blog as well. Your photos make the world seem so breezy and good!
Okay, what I like the most about summer. I really really like that first day of real summer, when you can finally cycle in shorts or skirt and NO jacket on, that’s a bit like heaven. Oh and also the fact that I’m suddenly happy again! I particularly like the summer evening/nights, you know with good people, good food, good wine and all that. Or picknicks. And also the freckles some people get on their faces, and the way everyone seems to loosen up a bit. And the fact that the light in the summer is so awesome for making photos.
Well, there’s lots of things, can’t really choose one thing I guess ;)

    Have a lovely day,

    A lucky gal (I hope!)

Hi:) My favorite thing of summer is few hours in the evening when the sun goes down little by little and all around looks different, smells different. I escape from home to enjoy those moments outdoors and I wish those moments last forever. Yeap… evening walks is the best part of my summer.

I’m gonna opt out of the giveaway, since you’ve been generous with your replies for quite some time…since before London…but I do have a summer high: Creole tomatoes. They’re my favorite things about summer. They are to die for thickly sliced, still warm from the garden with salt, pepper and a slosh of balsamic vinegar. Actually, any meaty, minimally juicy tomato will do, since I’m betting Creole tomatoes can be hard to come by in the UK. Love your photos but also your music links…quite a lot in fact.

Hi, Brian. I’ve subscribed to The Blue Hour for a few months now.

My favorite thing about summer is feeling like I’m playing hooky when running everyday errands. Visiting a store that’s a little further away to extend the outing a bit, contemplating different purchases than usual, adding a small treat to the usual sensible items, taking the long way home from the shops to enjoy the shade of different trees (and maybe an ice cream cone, why not?). Summer is especially conducive to this sort of behavior. A close second is Shakespeare performed outdoors all over the city. Whether at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park or a parking lot in the LES, summer means Shakespeare.

That is, unless it’s sweltering hot (I’m in Brooklyn, which — as you may recall — hosts many truly unforgiving summer days!) when my favorite thing about summer is iced coffee, iced tea, the shaded side of the street, and cool showers.

The best part of summer, as a New Yorker, is the absense of coats/scarfs/mittens/hats/boots in our lives. In a city where you tote your belongings around all day on foot, its so freeing to simply throw on a dress and grab a light bag to head to dinner or a bar or even a store without knocking everyone over in your wake. In the summer we are all so much less… clunky. Yes, the lack of clunkiness– that is my favorite summer thing :)

  180. June 30, 2010 2:38 pm

I don’t have just one favorite thing about summer, but among the many (many) things I love, in no particular order: sunshine, cherries, warm evenings, long hours of daylight, gardening, full days offline, dinners for a week or more without ever leaving the garden…

I love your photos a whole lot, I have been extolling your faded London pictures to a lot of people and share them a stupid amount on Google Reader. Even put them up on my blog back in march to waffle on about the ‘appealing atmosphere’ – the saturday morning sunshine and quietness. (http://neris.livejournal.com/396198.html) :3

My favourite thing is lying in bed at 6am in complete darkness, then waking up and whipping the curtain back while still in bed and bright light floods the room. And the curtains smell nice from the night air that’s been wafting across all night. The smell and the sunlight.

I would genuinely love a print! Fingers crossed.

brian! what a response! i love getting your photo updates. you capture London at its best and always make me see it in a new way. my favourite thing about summer? there are so many things … bbqs as the sun’s setting; warm nights with the window pushed up as high as it’ll go so a fresh breeze billows into the shade and permeates the room all night; picking fresh peppermint from the garden for tea before bed; G&Ts – just because it’s summer.

Greetings from Santa Cruz! This is the first time in a month that I have had a spare moment to check your blog. Your photos consistently remind me of the beautiful moments in life we too often pass through, neglecting to truly live and embrace them. Thank you for slowing down to document these moments; in doing so you remind me to slow down and to live and to be present in each moment.

A few of favorite things about summer are: farmers’ markets brimming with color and taste; the sweet scent and flavor of perfectly ripe peaches and nectarines; long evening walks in the fading sunlight; the way the pace of life seems to slow down just a hint, as though the heat is whispering for us all to rest.

    Summer blessings.

I’m from Germany, currently studying in the Netherlands, off to Sweden for half a year in August… And since my summer is a bit crazy in between all of the packing and moving and planning (not a professional traveller just yet!), your calm and peaceful pictures of the season have been a wonderful reminder of the serenity and beauty that lies in everyday things. So thank you for that! :)

And my favorite thing about summer? Three very cliched things: evening skies, walking barefoot on hot asphalt or grass, and thunderstorms.

As a fellow former Brooklynite now living in London the beauty that you find in the city makes me enjoy it even more. My favorite thing about summer has always been the packages of vegetables my grandparents send me from their farm. Sadly, they are in the US, and vegetable importation laws means that I don’t get to have that one right now, but the farmers markets around town keep me satisfied for now.

    Hi Brian,

Not a lurker and have certainly said hi before – but hi anyway! And I shall add in my 2 cents in the ‘favorite thing about summer’ – has to be the nostalgic memory of the family summer beach hols and the station wagon journey from New Jersey to the Outer Banks of North Carolina….. inevitably the car would break down or the air con would go and we’d be sweating it out on the vinyl seats…. but it was all worth it for that delicious first scrunch of sand under bare feet and the first cold rushing wave….

My favorite thing about summer must be the feeling that we can decide to do things at the very last time: two days in Paris, a picnic on the sea side…

hello! i think i might have only commented once before, but i’ve been enjoying your photos and blog for the past few months (maybe longer? time is flying!)! i’ve been living in Illinois (not Chicago) for the past two years and am just now heading back in the middle of the summer to New Hampshire, not terribly far from where i grew up. i’ll miss the summer cicadas out here, but i finally get to cherish again the cool evenings, summer hikes, and trips to the rocky Maine coast. no air conditioning needed, just open those windows and for that breeze!

    thanks and cheers!

    hello brian,
I lurke and write from treviso, italy, but I was born in venice, so one of my favourite things about summer has always been the “Festa del Redentore” (if you don’t know it, here http://www.redentorevenezia.it/English.htm you can see what is it), when all venetian people have dinner outside, along the canals and the “calli”, eating (and above of all drinking) together, until the midnight fireworks in front of San Marco basilica. it’s amazing! If you ever come to venice in july don’t miss it. and call me, of course :)

i like summer because the air sits somehow a little different and because bare feet at the beach aren’t easily beat. happy summer, brian. i’m glad it has finally reached there.

No better time than this one to make a formal hello! I’ve been reading, lurking and leaving a comment or two occasionally since your Flickr friends banded together to send you Bon Voyage messages on their various streams. Reading your blog while you are now in London lets me see the things that I didn’t get to see when I was there for a short visit last year.

I’ve got two favourite things about summer. One is going out at night and the warmth is still lingering in the air…it’s nice enough that you can go out at night without a jacket. The other is being able to take photos in natural light longer and later, especially beautiful at magic hour.

    well, hello from Paris,

I guess i found your blog through the glass doorknob, must have been quite a while ago.

This days I spend (too) much time commuting to work, running between buses and trains. I always enjoy visiting here : your photography gives me a feeling of quietness, reminds me to notice the little joys of the everyday. Thank you very much for that.

favorite thing about summer: driving in the country side, windows rolled down, with the beautiful golden light of a late summer evening.

I just found your blog about a week ago and I’m hooked. You have such a talent for capturing the beauty around you. What a blessing.

Okay so my favorite thing about summer is the way the sun cast a golden orange hue on everything about an our before sunset. And the sunsets. I’m sure they’re beautiful everywhere but I know they’re magnificent here in Tennessee.

    Have a great day! :)

Hey, I’m Sophie C., usually living in Paris, but in Montreal (Canada) for the summer. What I like about the season? The wind through the leaves, the beautiful skies, the picnics, slowing down on work, time with friends and family, iced (real) tea… I love your photos and the tone of your blog. Been making bircher muesli since you gave the recipe ;-)

    Hello.
I’ve been enjoying your photos/posts for a bit now (silently); thanks for the invitation for introduction – really exceptional photos; they always give me a smile. It’s so nice to see some of the world through another’s eyes.

My favorite thing about summer – the way time feels differently than any other season – almost endless.

  225. July 1, 2010 3:47 pm

230! Hi, Brian. I only comment when I’m into talking but regularly visit your blog. Favourite thing(s) about summer: travelling light, no-cook dinners, less sleep, easy access to evening light:)

Hello Brian. I have your site bookmarked but have never left a comment. I love your photos! They are the kind of photos i want to learn to take. I’m an aspiring photographer, there is so much I want to learn! I don’t know where to start, i.e, online classes, classes at a local college, books….can you give me any advice on where to start learning to take better pictures?

Summer, I can’t get enough of it! If it were summer all year long I would never tire of it (long daylight hours especially!) My husband says I would though. I still don’t believe him.

hey all – thanks for the wonderful response, giveaway is closed now. winner to be announced.

Even though the giveaway is closed, I want to say hi anyway. :)
I love your photos and I’m so inspired by all the places you go! Being stuck in Texas isn’t so bad with your lovely travels documented. I also love love the poems and playlists and links you post. Basically, you are great. Thanks.

My favorite thing about summer is staying up super super late and remembering how endless and magical summer felt when i was little. i especially like when i feel those moments in my life these summer days.

Nice to see so many posts from my fellow lurkers. I meant to leave a note and say hello and that I enjoy your photos and music pics. I’m in L.A. so summer is kind of like the rest of the year, but I’ve been loving biking around town and the long days.

  230. July 5, 2010 9:50 am

I’m too late for the contest, but I do fit the lurker bill and thought I’d still say hello, since I so enjoy visiting your site and seeing your photos. The best bits of summer, for me (an admittedly autumnal soul), are lantern-lit evenings, fresh berries, and homemade iced tea. It is kind of neat to see the sun still out at 9pm too. And road trips are pretty great. Not to mention loafing around near the beach, with a good book and plenty of shade.Ok, summer’s not so bad afterall. : )

  231. July 5, 2010 10:45 am

Hello. I’m in Seattle. And I love a summer backyard bbq with friends, a lakeside bike ride, a weekend roadtrip, a salted caramel ice cream cone, an outdoor wedding, wild roses, the World Cup, and late evening light filtering into our living room.

  232. July 5, 2010 2:33 pm

Also too late, I thought I’d leave a comment anyway. Having just moved from Michigan to Chicago, I’ve been without internet and missing TBH. Summer has never been my favorite season, though it has its unique niceties – ice cole beverages, linen shirts, long bike rides, parties on porches and patios, eating outdoors, LAKE MICHIGAN! I am loving summer in Chicago, but missing Michigan. As a former Michigander, I’ll bet you can relate!

  233. July 5, 2010 3:35 pm

not quite sure if I have ever left a comment before.. hello!:) my favourite things about summer are long evenings, the beautiful light and warmth.

Been following your blog for a while now after finding it randomly. Love the feel of your photos. My favorite thing about summer – warm evenings in chambray shorts and canvas shoes without socks. Keep on shooting!

Howdy Bri! I just started looking at your site, in fact. It was suggested by my colleague Danielle Scruggs at Charm City Current. My favorite things about summer: Short sleeves and salt air.
