eggs & toast
September 22, 2010
. . . . . . . . . . .
my friend Jördis was visiting london this past weekend and so i took her to leila’s shop, one of my favorite spots in london, for eggs, toast, jam and coffee. as usual, it was a great way to start the day. my favorite thing about leila’s is how simple and unfussy it is. sure, i can make this food at home (and i do, quite often) – but the atmosphere at this café can’t be beat.
leila’s shop is located in shoreditch at 17 calvert avenue (near arnold circus).
. . . . . .
i hope to have some new music to share with you tomorrow; until then, you might want to check out my friend michael’s mix for autumn, it’s fantastic.

I had breakfast there not too long ago. Great little place.
Another place to try for breakfast hurrah!
this is torture…
but i love it.
Leila’s looks so much like home and quite charming. No wonder it’s a favorite, it would be one of mine as well. I really like the fourth image down, the view into the kitchen.
Amazing photos. And London is very worth a visit.
Beautiful shots! Made me hungry! :)

looks like a fabulous place!
great photos, i the saturated colors and tones. great blog :)
Ok, I’m jealous. You live in England and I don’t.
*sigh*
really nice sir! nice photos! :)
Oh là là… Photography featuring beautifully crafted lattés and nap-inducing breakfast foods holds a special place in my heart.. thanks so much for sharing :)

Great pics, friend. Keep up the great work. Next time in London I know where I will be for breakfast…
they have pastéis de nata! and how wonderful those little enamel bowls are. love your portrait of that place.
Tantalizing photos….I want to hop on a plane right now just to be there tomorrow morning!
I love every photograph in this post, what a great cafe !!!
These photos are all ridiculous, Ferry. I’m coming over right now.
I love the pictures! So glad you were freshly pressed.
This looks wonderful!
This place is amazing, making me miss London. Great shots as well.
Leila’s look delicious! If I ever cross the big pond to visit London I will have to stop by this cute little place. I love simple yet flavorful dishes! I think I just fell in love with all of your photos!
Really looks like such a sweet place, too bad I’m not in England, I need some breakfast!! Thanks for sharing!!

thanks buddy!
the photos are always amazing, but i asked me why the name of a muffin is in portuguese (“arroz” sounds like portuguese).
those are not muffins. in portugal we have this cake which we call “bolo de arroz”. in english, it would be “rice cake”.
it’s true. and i can see also some delicious “pastéis de belém”, aka “pastéis de nata”! i hope that you put some cinnamon on top of them… yummy… love london! =)
Hint: in England ‘muffins’ are made of bread unless you frequent some god-awful global chain or other
And in London you can breakfast in just about any national cuisine that takes your fancy. Portugese cafés are quite common.
Great photos. Makes me want to recreate that meal in my kitchen since I am an ocean away from London. Look forwards to seeing more!
This looks amazing. Like a little piece of heaven. Thanks for sharing these pictures. You take great photography as well :)

Places like that are great, and the photos are beautiful. My daughter lives in London–I’ll pass this on!
Hi ! Maybe I find my “copy” ;)
I love the preview of your world !!
Good time !!
(I try to make my preview of my world too..)
I love how you capture what you feel in there – the simplicity and unfussyness.
It makes me feel I am sitting there right with you guys and I can almost smell the coffee and taste the eggs….
– wanna go there.
Great photo’s, looks absolutely yummy!

You are right! The photos expressed a very homey feeling and atmosphere of the place. Cool.
oh my..these images are so beautiful…this place looks amazing..and sometimes the simplest food can be the best
Looks delish. Nice photos. What kind of camera do you use?
all this food looks so good ^^
Really enjoyed your pics! They made me hungry, and want to find this cafe very soon!
It’s hard to beleive this is a shop. It more looks like a home kitchen and that is what makes it wonderful. I wish I could have some of that tasty looking jam there.
congratulations on being “freshly pressed!” your photos are gorgeous. really makes me want to go back to england. bravo!
Too bad for me that I’m stuck in class and can’t go out to find a café serving breakfast. Not that Norwegians are any good at breakfast anyway… But now I’m starving! Great pictures.
love, love, love this post.
I love it when you make a simple meal at a place look so good that I wanna be there too!
Why do some places put coffee in a drinking glass instead of a coffe mug? I’ve noticed this in other places in Europe as well. Half the fun of enjoying coffee is the cup.
so lovely.
Wow what beautiful photos. I especially like the one of the eggs and empty coffee.

Well, as I have been checking you blog for a long long time and every time I can find myself thinking: well well this person knows and has the right feeling how to take photos,
so I thought I should also let the author know that :)
keep the nice vibe going!
Your* gaash
Brilliant shots. Superb light. I feel like in front of a cookery book, for some ;). Well down, dude !
Now, this looks like the very best kind of breakfast place. I’m putting it in my London folder for the next trip over :)
i’m completely mesmerized by that espresso…..wow!
These are beautiful. Although I also have a slight bias towards breakfast food.
That’s the perfect breakfast for me, wonderful photo impressions!
yummy! I absolutely love your photos:)
Loooooove Leila’s Shop :)
i think i’m ready to move in.
Love the photos so cute!!!
Never heard of the place before- looks amazing. I’m off to try it later in the week!
Looks like a cozy place! And beautiful pictures.
Looks yummy! Breakfast is one of my fav meal. I would go out of my way to just grab something simple and nice even if I can do it myself at home. I love your photos BTW! :)
the coffe shop, is it portuguese caffee? because some cakes , like rice cake, the label is written in portuguese. and good cakes in deed. with espresso cafe in milk and tosts with jam , are the normal portuguese breackfast. enjoy ….. ^__^
Bolo de arroz e pastéis de nata… is it a portuguese café?:)
Fab photos – love your blog! Thanks for sharing.
If I was to put out a record I’d have you produce the sleeve. Which is about as generous as I can be. Bravo.
nice photographs. Heading to London for xmas so will definitely check this place out. Lived there for a while and really struggled to find a good coffee actually, so good find :)
