the canteen

March 1, 2011

photos are mine, from the archives and posted here before.

. . . . . . . . . .

i don’t normally post things like this, but i feel too strongly about it not to say something.

the rochelle school canteen, a beloved local spot in shoreditch, is in serious danger of being closed down. the council has upheld a petition by some local residents and the canteen has had its application to renew its license blocked. the reasons given are noise and antisocial behavior. (let’s not get into the surrounding clubs/businesses which are likely the true source of the late-night noise and antisocial behavior. suffice it to say that the canteen, which is a quiet spot open on weekdays only until 4pm, is not the offender).

the canteen is a true gem. i’ve had a handful of memorable lunches in this unique and beautiful space, tucked away from the street. the food is delicious and the canteen creates a sense of community in a neighborhood that has had its fair share of crime and problems. the canteen creates jobs, it buys local food and it is a vital part of the surrounding area.

if you would like to do something to help, please join me in sending a letter to the council supporting the appeal. HERE you can find a form letter that i urge you to print, sign and send in. the letter must be postmarked by 3 march (this thursday), so please act quickly.

there is more helpful information about the canteen and the appeal HERE.

thanks, and if you live in london, i hope you will act to support this wonderful local business.

(back to regularly scheduled posting around here later today)

I love Rochelle Canteen–I associate it with quiet lunches in the sun and a nourished spirit. I’ve just printed off my three copies to mail; thank you so much for notifying me to the cause.
