. . . . . . . . . .

Thinking about feeling and summer and the end of things this morning. (I’m listening to the new Grizzly Bear album – so yeah, it’s a pretty heavy morning around here.) There is a slight chill in the air right now and everyone keeps saying, “it feels like fall today!” and I have to admit, it does. I’m happy to wave goodbye to the heat & humidity in NYC for sure (the Union Sq. subway station has become the 9th circle of hell), but I’m not ready to let go of that summer feeling just yet.

Yet this morning, in honor of the first cool morning in months – when hot coffee really does seem appropriate and I’m not reaching for a pair of shorts to wear for the day – I thought I’d share a group of outtakes from my UK travels back in March.

I have very few “summer” memories in London – it was generally mild and often chilly there – so these photos above seem appropriate for a chilly morning. I took all of these when I was visiting the UK, only 3 short months after moving back to the US (I was shooting all of the photos for my exhibition). These are outtakes, I guess.

Someday I will be able to put my feelings about London into words – sum it up neatly when people ask me, “what did you like about living in London?”. It’s a deeply personal reaction for me, even 10 months after moving back to the US – there is a certain something that I can’t quite put my finger on, but it felt (it still feels) so different than NYC feels – feelings are hard to describe sometimes. Maybe these photos above will help? I don’t know if they will – they don’t tell the whole story – but I can sometimes describe my feelings by showing you my photographs.

And for the record, I still do think of London often and fondly, and wish I could travel back there again soon, very much (despite the general lack of a summer).

Enough heavy thoughts for now — the sun is out in Brooklyn today.  It’s warming up. Time to get to work.

‘Generally mild’ – love it, sums it up perfectly!
I’ve really enjoyed seeing these, B.

Goes without saying that I for one wish you were still over this side of the pond mate…however we’ll settle for a visit whenever you next can make it. Also, “generally mild”…haha, brilliant!

I live in Ireland and a (foreign) friend this summer described the weather as being “fabulously mixed” – which summed it up for me (it rained all summer, with occasional glints of sunshine). Many English friends of mine yearn to live in NYC; it’s interesting to read about your Opposite Journey.

These photos are so good. It’s hard for me to say why I like them so much- a sense of quiet thoughtfulness. It feels like time has stopped for a moment in these images. Thanks for sharing them.

I like reading your thoughts and these photos are such a good summation of moments.

Hey! Fantastic photos, they’ve made me miss living in england a tiny bit. I love those little windows on the pavements like in photo #4. I too enjoyed a hot coffee the other day, this is the best time of year.

I’m sure that, once I’m done in France and, afterwards, Germany, I’m going to have those same feelings of the not quite able to define or explain with words that people will understand properly. Photos do normally do a better job.

Great photos! I’ve been living in London for 2,5 years now and I certainly know how much I’m gonna miss this city when I leave. These photos tell a very familiar story…

Beautiful photos and beautiful text. I moved to London about a year ago and I fell deeply in love with this city, in a way I wouldn’t have expected. I understand how hard is to put feelings into words but you surely put them in pictures, thank you for that.

There are certain places in the world where geografic position, light, history, topography, nature and people, come together in a special combination. Only eyes with trained perception can capture that. I absolutely adore the melancholy on all of the above! Well done man and thank you.

I Adore the mood and the colours in these. Make me want to jump in the Eurostar.

I love your UK photos. Your way with light is so aligned with my experiences of London.

Very lovely captures, as always, Brian. And I spot Tommy of This Is Naive there ;) I guess I could say the same about Amsterdam. Been there only twice- last Fall and recent Summer- and only for a short while during both occasions but there is just something that always bring my heart back there.

What a beautiful collection! I wonder if some of these out takes are better than the actuals? Do I detect some shots from Rye there ( or some other South East coastal town )

Interesting how London longs to move to NY and NY longs to move to London. Those things will never change. We’re embroiled. Funny too as I remember the Summer here as being sunny and warm, yet no one else does. Maybe the west country got more
