“It’s more interesting to have just a picture of a small detail – then you can dream all the rest around it. Because when you see the whole thing, what is there to imagine?” – Dries van Noten (via jjjjound)
i don’t think that i’ve ever found a better description for the reason why i take many of the photos that i take.

agreed. the perfect sentiment.
That’s so true. And it goes for a number of things, not just pictures. Films, music, books too. Thanks for the reminder.
really love this, brian.
Excellent quote that can be applied to many aspects of our lives.
Rarely do I comment but I love your photos!
perfect. yes.
and that one of the blood orange? (is that what it is?) is stunning.
take care, brian.
the other day one of my MA coordinators just told us tha same thing. It’s better to leave people with the feeling of wanting more than showing them everything, that’s the end.
lovely
what a wonderful quote too
agreed.
So true, of photography and writing. That blood orange photo is one of my all time favorites of yours – takes my breath away.
I have a friend who is always giving me grief about closeups but that is why I like them too. The focus becomes intimate to the viewer and the subject and the rest just blurs away to be imagined and filled in by the brain on its own. Which makes for a whole other story.
absolutely right, and made me appreciate my own pictures more (have gotten so tired of them lately).
perfectly stated, and illustrated.
These are lovely. So is the quote.
such a lovely quote. your photos are always a treat for my tired eyes.
thank you for digging into the details.
ps: those blood oranges are divine.
yes!
As a legally blind photographer, I feelt that quote can also be beautifully applied to how I see the world. I don’t focus on what I don’t see, I relish the parts that I do see, and love seeing the beauty. This quote and your words are perfect. I love the top two photos.
love everything about this post
The quote is quite striking with it being Van noten’s even more. such a great designer with a profund and emotional aesthetics. one of my favorites indeed.
and your food photography NEVER ceases to amaze me…
I agree totally, the bubbles in the first pic are amazing, and that brick wall in the garden, perfection !!!
Oh and I love the jam on toast, just having my breakfast of jam on toast as I write this !!!
What a great quote. My favorite shots of yours are of food and books and this post has both of them.
lovely shots. and a perfect quote to match.
thanks for the inspiration.
Henri Cartier-Bresson:
“In photography, the smallest thing can be a great subject. The little human detail can become a leitmotif.”
:)
That quotes also says a lot about why I enjoy your website so much.
those shots are really lovely…there is always a certain warmth about them.
and i do like the quote you have chosen. dries van noten is such a great designer with an eye for beautiful patterns and fabrics.
True words! I love to capture details and play with the field of depth in pictures!
And this is as well as why I love your pictures :)
Viele Gruesse, Kristina
Makes me happy!
life is in the details!
Love your photos, been checkin in for a while now and just wanted to tell you so!
Blood orange season is a happy time of the year.
Sometimes until you read the words….you don’t realize that is what you have been living.
Amen to that quote.
Also- your photographs really embody London’s essence, I think.
and a reason I enjoy your photos do much… I get to participate in them (even if it’s only in my imagination)
