These are all my own favorite photographs taken during the past year (even narrowing it down to this many was nearly impossible though…)
When I was going back through my archives from 2012 and choosing the photos to include here, I was thinking about all that I have seen and photographed and all of the people I’ve met this year. And unsurprisingly, when I think back on this past year I don’t remember the little struggles or the daily stresses that inevitably pop up as a freelance photographer. And there are many – working for myself as a photographer has been incredibly rewarding and I still can’t believe that this is my job now. But it can also be isolating, difficult, nerve-wracking and stressful – just like any job, I guess.
Instead, what I remember about 2012 are the moments I saw and those that I captured with my cameras. I was so fortunate to travel to lots of different places – some of them new to me, other places that are familiar. I met interesting people along the way and heard their stories and tried to capture something about them — their home, their art, their gardens, their work, their smile, their collections or favorite books, their families.
I think this is really the best part about being a photographer, whether it is paid work or personal work or even cell-phone snaps on Instagram – an opportunity to look closely and to listen, to take the time and really see something. It’s an invitation to seek new things and search out new experiences and to capture the essence of it all through my lens.
And I want to thank you for your support this year – for sharing my work with your colleagues and families and friends, for sending me incredibly kind emails and notes, for buying photo prints and posters, for introducing me to people and new ideas, and for giving me the confidence to pursue photography full-time this year.
I’ve learned so much over the past 12 months, and it has been a huge investment of time (and money…). But man, it is absolutely 100% worth it. Next year, I will need to focus more on paid photography work and commercial jobs, but I will always remain focused on creating photos that mean something to me. And I can’t wait to see what 2013 will bring – new places, new friends, new experiences and ideas, and new ways of seeing the world and distilling my experiences into photographs.
Happy holidays and happy new year. See you in 2013!

I am really psyched to share a new series of personal work with you today.
Visit my portfolio to see the full set of photos I shot this year at a cabin in the Angeles National Forest in California. And meet Daniel Kent, a man of many talents (and the guy who brewed the beer & cider for the opening party of my exhibition in April). The cabin is amazing and so is the area where it’s located – I had a lot of fun shooting this one. Big thanks to Daniel and to my friend Garrett Colton for the introduction back in April.
I hope you enjoy.

In mid-November, I spent some time back in Ann Arbor, Michigan. On my last day there, I went for a long walk in the Nichols Arboretum, one of my favorite spots when I was a student. I snapped the photos above and they feel like November to me. Before the Winter solstice occurs in a couple of days, I wanted to post them here. The colors have really stuck with me.
Today I turn 33 years old and I guess it’s making me feel a bit reflective – so I’d like to do a post or two in the coming week, looking back on the past year’s work. It’s been a good one – intense, but very good. I feel like it’s important to dwell on it before launching into a new year. Stay tuned.
But I’ve been super busy finishing up projects from 2012 over the past couple of weeks. I have a new series of personal work that I’ll share with you tomorrow (fingers crossed). Then I’ll post a few more times in the coming days as I finish work for the year before a holiday break until 2013.
In the meantime:
+ Wish I could see Matt Paweski’s furniture exhibit, “The Fancy World”, in person at South Willard. Matt is brilliant (I’m planning a studio visit with him in 2013 – stay tuned)
+ I’m listening to John Fahey’s Christmas album a lot (I really need to get this on vinyl…)
+ I’m obsessed with finding the original hanging faces from Bennington Pottery after seeing this one at Al & Erika’s apartment Saturday night (look at this guy!)
+ And as always in December, I’m listening to the This American Life Holiday Spectacular, a favorite of mine
+ A favorite photo from last week’s shoot at artist Matthew Ronay’s studio

I had drafted a post for today with some links and other good stuff.
But after hearing the tragic news from Newtown, CT, I’m not in the mood.
Instead, a quiet photo and a moment of silence for those who died today.

More new work to share today:
Back in October, I visited the home and studio of Tracy Wilkinson. Today, Freunde von Freunden has published my photos along with a great interview with Tracy, a multi-talented artist, designer and maker. I had a blast shooting photos at her place in Mount Washington, Los Angeles. There are amazing views of the San Fernando mountains, inspiring textiles and hand-made furniture throughout, wood paneling, a great dog named Simba, a cinderblock interior with stone and brick fireplaces … basically, a house that epitomizes Southern California to a outsider/New Englander.
Tracy is a really lovely gal … funny and warm, interesting and interested.
When people ask me if I’d ever move to Los Angeles, I basically point to this house and say … “if I could live like this, then why not?”.
Head over to FvonF to see the full interview and the photos. And even more photos have been published on Germany’s online newspaper, Zeit Online.
Thanks to Tracy for letting me capture her amazing home and to the FvonF team for publishing the photos.
(and I’ll add the full set of photos to my portfolio in the next couple of days, so stay tuned)

I have lots of new work to share with you this week…
FIRST UP: an editorial I photographed for the Winter Design issue of BROOKLYN MAGAZINE.
The editor asked me to visit and photograph the Clinton Hill apartment of roommates Laura Wass, Pepi Ginsberg and Lucy Childress. They are talented, funny ladies and they live in a comfortable apartment with so many interesting details. It was a great assignment.
Check out the full article in the new issue of the magazine, available now. A slideshow of photos accompanies the article online.

Above: the film version of a photo you might have seen on my Instagram feed a couple of weeks ago. I’m glad I shot this on a real camera though, so I can add it to my portfolio.
This was supposed to be the week when I caught up on the backlog of things on my to-do list, and starting posting more often again here. Neither of these things is happening, unfortunately and my to-do list is only growing bigger (along with my email inbox). Someday I will figure out how to budget my time more wisely as a freelancer, but that moment is clearly not right now.
So, I thought I’d do a quick photo post before continuing to wrestle with Photoshop. A long night ahead of me…
And I’ll be back here really soon with a proper post.

PRINT_SHOP_ is now open for business!
Head on over to brianwferry.bigcartel.com to see the 5 limited edition prints that I am offering for sale. These are all photographs I made in 2012, so I thought it was fitting to end the year selling some of my favorite photos of 2012. I think one of these limited edition prints would make a great gift for someone special (or if you’re like me during the holidays, perhaps a gift for yourself?!).
Please pass on the link to PRINT_SHOP_ to your friends, colleagues, blog/Twitter/Tumblr followers, etc. I’d love to sell as many of these prints as possible and I thank you kindly for your help & support, now and throughout the year.
(note: if you would like to ensure delivery before Christmas (especially for destinations outside of the U.S.), please be sure you order right away and let me know if you need expedited shipping. I can’t guarantee delivery by a certain date but I will start shipping next Tuesday, December 4 and I will ship within 1 day of receiving your order. I will not ship orders between December 20 and 29 while I’m traveling for the holidays.)
Thanks again.
