Now that the leaves have fallen from the trees outside, my apartment has become brighter just as the days are growing much shorter.

(I guess I’ve been paying close attention to the changing light: I just picked up 3 rolls of film and about half of them are photos of the light in my apartment… )

I moved back to the US from London exactly 1 year + 1 week ago. It seems like a long time ago now… I’m sharing more outtakes from my travels back to the UK in March of this year (when I was shooting the photos for my exhibition).  I’ll post the rest of my UK photos from March later this week.

2 things to share with you:
+ I’m honored to be featured with an interview on the Avant/Garde Diaries website  (lots of talented people there – I particularly like this video piece about Chances With Wolves)
+ I will be opening an online print shop in the coming week!  It will only be open for a limited time, and I’ll be selling editions of a few favorite prints – stay tuned for more information. I hope to start taking orders before the end of this week.

New work for Bon Appétit

November 20, 2012

. . . . . . .

My first shoot for Bon Appétit magazine is on newsstands now. I photographed a short editorial (“Fast, Easy, Fresh”) for the December 2012 holiday issue – tearsheets above.

A bit different from my usual work, it was a lot of fun to shoot this.  Thanks to the BA team, Vivian Lui (food styling) and Lisa Lee (prop styling).

Just over 1 year ago, right before I moved back to the US from London, I had the chance to take photographs with Freunde von Freunden. I photographed the well-known British artists Tim Noble & Sue Webster at their Shoreditch studio. It was an incredible day.

Above are a few outtakes from the shoot. The full set of photographs and an interview will be posted on Freunde von Freunden in the next couple of months and I can’t wait to show you.

In mid-October in California, I took a drive through the canyons to the coast and visited El Matador beach in Malibu.  It was a really nice day off.

(p.s.  Matthew Monteith is so talented – I’m really enjoying his photos, via Xavier)

Interiors

Recently re-watched Woody Allen’s film “Interiors” (1978).  Still a heavy and intense story. But man oh man, it is so visually rich … the set design, colors, costumes, cinematography.  Full of inspiration.

Lots of outtakes from the editorial I shot for Wilder Quarterly’s Fall 2012 issue: Dogfish Head Asado at Salt Water Farm in Lincolnville, Maine.

Above, you’ll see some of the incredible team at Salt Water Farm as well as the guests and some of the food prep. (N.B. That whole butterflied lamb was the best lamb I’ve ever eaten, without a doubt).

Thanks again to the Wilder team for commissioning me to shoot this one!

I’m psyched that I was able to shoot an editorial for the new issue of Wilder Quarterly (Fall 2012). I photographed the Dogfish Head Asado at Salt Water Farm in Lincolnville, Maine. An incredible day with great people. The issue is available to purchase now so get yourself a copy (or visit one of their fine stockists).

There’s a lot of good stuff in there, including photography by many of my favorites: Ye Rin Mok, Benjamin Alexander Huseby, Jody Rogac, Logan White, Osma Harvilahti, Bobby Doherty, Samantha Casolari, etc…

I’ll share some outtakes from the shoot in a separate post — and I’ll be adding the work to my portfolio very soon.

(from a forthcoming series of new work)

. . . . . .

For the past couple of months, I’ve been keeping a Tumblr journal where I post some of my photographs. I’ve been very vocal about my dislike of Tumblr in the past, as you probably recall. I still have serious issues with the amount of reblogging that happens there when no credit is given to the owners of copyrighted images.

But I’ve also spoken with a few photo professional friends and they helped to change my mind about posting my own work on Tumblr. A lot of photo editors, photographers and other related professionals use Tumblr to follow the work of artists that they like. Also, if I post my photos to my own Tumblr site, then they may retain proper credit if they are re-blogged, which is good.

So far, I like the ease of Tumblr – this WordPress blog has always been a place where I can post a whole series of related photographs, often with writing or links. Tumblr’s platform is different – I like how I can quickly post single images there, often randomly. I’ve been dipping into my archives a bit and posting old photos, as well as outtakes from previous work and photos taken with my cell phone.  I don’t plan to post the work of others on Tumblr – just my own.

Nothing will change here — I will continue to post as I normally do on the blue hour (don’t worry). But if you have a Tumblr account or if you are interested, you can follow me at brianwferry.tumblr.com. And I’ve added a link to my Tumblr journal here (in the sidebar on the left), so you can check in there even if you don’t have a Tumblr account.
