black, white & grey

November 1, 2010

. . . . . . .

so, i’ve decided that i’m going to shoot almost exclusively black & white film for the month of november. i’m doing this for two reasons: first, i am really inspired by black & white images lately and i think that the best way to get better at shooting in B&W myself is to practice. second, i’ve grown tired of my own photographs recently, and i need a change.

the photos above are old ones, but i’ll have new B&W photos soon.

i’ll also share some of my black & white photographic inspiration over the next couple of weeks. it was cool to check in at julian strangler this morning and see this post – how appropriate.

more soon.

I was thinking something along the same lines- shooting b&w this coming month.

I also think that November is the month that is best suited to B/W. November and February.

At first I thought you were going to say you were going to only shoot vertically. But this idea I like much better. Wonderful, Brian. Can’t wait to see what you come up with.

have you figured out what b/w film you’re liking these days? i’d love it if you kept track of grain and tone this month too, of what ever you’re shooting. (here, let me give you an assignment, sheesh!)

i do the same, change something and keep at it for a bit when i get bored with my own photographs. which is often, to be honest. these are amazing, can’t wait to see what you have for the rest of this month.

So gorgeous. I haven’t shot b&w in ages. Love to know what film you’re using. I think November is a good month for b&w, it’s just starting to get a little frigid outside.

kate, i used ilford delta 3200 in the 1st photo above, and i think the rest were shot with fuji acros 100.

I think London really suits itself to being explored in b&w. I’d sort of gotten away from looking at a lot of b&w, but the above photos made me want to start again. The brick in the 2nd from the bottom really looks fantastic in gray tones, and the last photo? I ABSOLUTELY love it. I tend to be more naturally drawn to high contrast images (and, come to think of it, flavors in my food), so that one in particular really speaks to me!

good luck on shooting more b&w, can’t wait to see the results. i know what you mean about growing tired of your own work, i find myself in that same hole, a lot. change seems to be the best remedy.

the last photo reminds me of 28 days later.. it has a post-apocalyptic vibe to it.
brian, i’m going to berlin next week and (after seeing your berlin posts) i was wondering if you could recommend some good places to visit?

    thanks!

Lovely! I love the idea of shooting an entire month in b&w. Coincidentally, I just got my very first roll of b&w film developed this past weekend, and I am hooked. Quite hooked. There’s just something about it that’s so timeless.

What a fanastic idea Brian! I can’t wait to see the images you create. I’m certainly trying to shoot more black and white film, though I don’t know if I’ll do it all month. :)
