look out the window

March 30, 2011

. . . . . . . . . . .

i like to take photos in airports sometimes, or on the plane looking out the window. when it’s the latter, people will sometimes look at me like i’m crazy, pointing my camera out the window during a flight. but i think they are the crazy ones — you are 30,000 feet in the air, above the earth, and you can almost always see something amazing. look out your window! the view is incredible and awe-inspiring and even when all you can see is the texture and pattern of the clouds below you, that is still enough. and it’s pretty much the only romantic thing left about flying these days.  so i savor it.

(my all-time favorite airplane photo is, of course, this photo by eggleston)

Ditto re: airplane photos and crazy glances. I don’t care though, as you said..they definitely make the most interesting photos! Love these…

love these shots, ferry. my dad has a collection of plane window shots going back to his teens – i’d really love to do something with them one day, they’re so evocative.

    totally agree!

I agree with you, taking photos out a plane window is awesome, there is so much going on that you don’t get to see every day.

And people do look at me like I’m crazy which kind of makes me want to not do it. It has also happened to me on trains and I didn’t want people to think I’m crazy so I took them quickly and underexposed by accident.

I’m with you, I still get that buzz when flying …. people are so jaded sometimes or maybe they just don’t “Look” !!!
    Really liking this lot.

they are the crazy ones. :)
flying is such an amazing experience and a bit scary… looking out the window & taking photos on the plane makes me feel at ease.
i am always so surprised how unaware most people act on planes.

love, love, love your photos. so much.

I completely agree! The click of my shutter draws stares from my seat mate nearly every time but it’s impossible not to shoot when things like mountains look like mounds of sugar in the distance. From one of my last trips… http://www.flickr.com/photos/eyesofab/4877567911/ Love your first shot! I know that view well.

You’re right, that picture you linked to is beautiful! Definitely something I’ll be aiming to do on my way back home at the end of April!

Hua, I’m a little scared of what flying is concerned. But your photos are very beautiful.

I completely agree. I can gaze out of an airplane window for hours, watching the landscape below me shift.

I also always take pictures out of plane windows when I have the opportunity.

Some people probably look at us a little strange because they think the plane might crash because of the cam….

I agree. What isn’t amazing about being in the clouds? One time I saw a thunderstorm from the airplane. It was so beautiful.

I LOVE photos out of plane windows. I constantly do, and can never get enough of the different cloud photos I create. It always drives me crazy when people have window seats and they pull the shades down for the whole journey and not once look out, they are missing such a special treat. I often think of people who have never had the chance to fly and think it is sad that they haven’t witnessed the simple joy of seeing the clouds and the world from this angle.

Here is one favourite flickr photos from inside a plane that you may like, not of clouds but still lovely.

This post is breathtaking, and I totally agree with you that it’s such a shame not to take shots in the plane! I do that all the time.

I really like this post, the airport feeling everywhere…like on the ground as well as in the sky not being anywhere, neither at the place you`re leaving nor at the place you`re heading to…
