Recent Snaps, May

. . . . . .
Some recent photos snapped last month. The weather in NYC this spring has been so strange.

. . . . .
Sometimes while I am searching for something else on my hard drive, I look at older photos taken while I lived in London and I realize again how much I miss that place.
(I do not miss the weather)
Outtake for Wilder Quarterly Spring

. . . . . .
I photographed an editorial about asparagus for the spring issue of Wilder Quarterly, which should be out very soon (if not already). Above is my favorite outtake from the shoot.
For this shoot, I had the opportunity to take some portraits of a few incredible chefs — it was a really fun assignment. I’ll share more photos from the editorial later this week.
Martha Stewart Living – June issue

. . . . .
I’m really excited to share this work – I photographed The Institute of Domestic Technology in Altadena, CA for a story in the current issue of Martha Stewart Living (July 2013).
I’ve added a larger selection of the photos to my portfolio – check it out: http://www.brianwferry.com/institute-of-domestic-technology-msl.
You can find the issue on newsstands now. Thanks to MS Living and everyone at the Institute of Domestic Technology, this was a really fun assignment.
Laura Mvula photographed for Aritzia

. . . . . .
Lots of new client work to share this week …
First up, I was commissioned to photograph British singer Laura Mvula for Aritzia a couple of weeks ago. Laura’s debut album, Sing To The Moon, is getting excellent reviews and she was a real pleasure to meet and photograph. Above, I’m sharing a few outtakes from the shoot.
See my photos and read the full article in Issue 14 on Aritzia’s website.

Studio visit – Small Trade Company, San Francisco

. . . . . . . .
While I was in San Francisco in February, I was lucky to spend some time in the studio with Matt Dick, the brilliant guy behind Small Trade Company. My friends Marco and Heidi introduced me to Matt, and I am very thankful they did.
Matt’s studio is located in a bright, airy warehouse space which he has set up to serve a variety of purposes. On one side he has a studio/office and a small showroom of sorts. Here he can show clients the work he does – but even more importantly, you get a real sense of Matt’s aesthetic and eye from visiting this space. You can see this in the photos above – items such as books, tearsheets, objects, Matt’s work, ceramics, flowers, art and more, arranged in ways that really blew my mind. Matt’s vision and aesthetic is singular, unique, refined, and purposeful.
You see how this translates into the objects he makes, like textiles, bags and accessories. Most of these items are fabricated on the other side of his studio, where sewing machines and cutting tables are set up and piled with work in progress. Back in February, there was a 3rd part of the studio being built out – hopefully I can visit the next time I’m in SF and I’ll tell you about it then.
Thanks to Matt for letting me poke around the studio and take photos, and for showing me his incredible work. His website can be found at http://www.smalltradecompany.com/.

Next week, I’m really excited to share some new client/commissioned work here – I’ve been busy behind the scenes. In the meantime, enjoy the weekend ahead.

An early May walk in the woods in Connecticut, everything was just starting to bud.
“Mixed Greens” at Plantworks starts TODAY

. . . . . .
A reminder that the group exhibition MIXED GREENS opens today and the photos will be up through Monday at Plantworks (28 East 4th Street, NYC).
It is part of the Noho Design District organized by Sight Unseen and it features work from photographers Leslie Williamson, Paul Barbera, Laure Joliet, Debbie Carlos and Brian Ferry. Each photographer was invited to revisit past works that happen to feature plants — even if they weren’t originally the main subject of the shot.
There are a lot of fantastic events happening this weekend as part of ICFF and the Noho Design District, so be sure to check out the whole thing if you’re in New York.
(Also – the photos above are available for purchase, and each photo is mounted and framed. Please contact me if you are interested!)
“Mixed Greens” at Plantworks, 28 East 4th St, NYC / Friday May 17 – Monday May 20, 10AM to 6PM; Sunday May 19, 11AM to 5PM.
