Recently, The Aesthete commissioned me to photograph Italian-born artist Gaetano Pesce and his Soho studio. What a wild place! Mr. Pesce was gracious and a fascinating man. His studio, to quote the article, “… feels a bit like a cross between a psychedelic candy store and a journey through the human body.” Well said, Monica … I really enjoyed this one.
Read the excellent article written by Monica Khemsurov and see the feature on The Aesthete website.
“L’Abbraccio“, a new solo exhibition of Mr. Pesce’s works, has just opened in NYC at Fred Torres Collaborations in Chelsea. It’s worth a visit if you’re in the area!

I was looking through some images that I’ve recently collected as inspiration and I noticed a striking similarity between many of them, which was not in my mind as I collected them. This happens every so often – I find myself subsconsciously thinking about photos or other art that shares a similar color palette / theme / subject matter / vibe. I love when I make these connections – and then I can connect it to my work and process.

Side note: the photograph above at the very top left (the grasses at sunset) was part of my L.A. exhibition last year, and I printed it large in a single edition – I love it. It’s the only large print still available for purchase – if you’re interested in owning this, you can buy it (framed) HERE.
This is March

Not too much to say, so I’m just sharing a photo from the other day.
Light study

Up early this morning working on some photos and I came across these two photographs taken last January, 2012. There is a whole series of these … I was studying the light in my (brand-new at the time) apartment. I decided to bring them out of the archives and post them here. Love this sort of thing.
Have a nice Sunday.

In Los Angeles last month, Lauri Kranz of Edible Gardens LA hired me once again to shoot a few of the gardens she is working on around the city. We had a great day — we photographed the edible gardens she planted & tends at LACMA and at 2 private clients’ homes.
I can’t show you all of the photos right now – but I wanted to share a couple of photos from the shoot.
And you can see photos from our last shoot together here.

I’m really blown away by veteran photographer Sam Abell’s work and career. Highly recommended: this video and this interview. Amazing, amazing stuff.
And a photo set here and here. (Thanks to my friend Walter for sharing Sam’s work with me)

Working hard behind the scenes these days. Editing and prepping many, many photos from California. Working on a big portfolio re-org/re-launch. Scheming up business ideas, looking for new clients & new work. Learning tough lessons. Planning a portrait series and feeling excited about it. Tired of winter and NYC but trying to channel this disillusion into my work.
Also feeling squeezed and overwhelmed by the internet lately. So much hustling and posturing and copying and wanting. I’m looking for a quieter place … perhaps it’s time to step outside of the online info blast for a while. Spending less time online, and more time with real books and thoughtful movies and actual face-to-face conversation.
The winter continues; it’s snowing hard today and I’m thinking that snowstorms in March are never as nice as snowstorms in December. Happy to have photographic memories of California sunshine right now.
