Floyd Bennett Field

. . . . .
On the way back from the beach a couple of weeks ago, we stopped at the abandoned Floyd Bennett Field and snuck in for a few photos. What an incredible place – it has been completely left to the elements, a living art exhibit in its abandonment.
3 Plants

3 Plants in July.
Muted

Beach day recently at Jacob Riis – really incredible muted light that day.

I am such a big fan of Linda Brownlee‘s photography. I look through her portraits for inspiration all the time. So this week, I was happy to stumble on two things related to Linda:
+ First, I found this lecture she gave about her career and work in 2010 – really inspiring (& absolutely worth watching if you like her photographs).
+ Second, on Wednesday, NOWNESS posted a new short film that Linda made about an incredible street dancer named Oliver – it is stunning.

A Chance of Thunderstorms

. . . . .
I really dislike pithy quotations that attempt to offer inspiration, advice, etc. etc. — but this bit from the film WILD COMBINATION about Arthur Russell has stuck with me for months:
“Not many people allow themselves the full extent of their complexity.”
I can’t remember who said this, but the speaker was referring to Arthur and his willingness to embrace complexity, his desire to avoid categorization & easy answers at any cost. I think this is important to remember.
Without Entertaining Another Thought

. . . . . .
Recent photos from Connecticut.
I’ve been listening to “Easy, Easy” – a new one from King Krule. His music always makes me think of London.
Also, this print from Josh Brand, released in connection with his new book published by Hassla, “Nature“.
Looked Like the Moon

. . . . .
The brownstone next door to my apartment has been abandoned for years; recently, the owner started demolishing the interior and clearing it out. It is very (very) loud. And as they drag out all of the debris, years of dust, mold, glass, cement, plaster, fiberglass, ash (and I can only imagine what else) clouds the air and settles on EVERYTHING in sight. Needless to say, my windows have been closed.
After a particularly dusty day last week, I went outside with my camera and photographed the front of the building. The dust coated everything in a surreal silvery grey. Made me think of moon dust. I snapped a few photos before I started coughing and went back inside.
